Physicians who wish to undertake a significant change in their scope of practice, or who wish to re-enter practice after not having practised for two consecutive years, are required to report the change to the College. To provide additional clarity around when physicians are required to report a change to CPSO, the Advice to the Profession: Changing Scope of Practice and/or Re-entering Practice has been recently updated. The Advice document provides specific examples of what constitutes a significant change in scope and examples of evolution in practice, where the change is not significant.

CPSO expects physicians to ensure that they have the required knowledge, skills, judgment, training, mentorship and experience to perform additional diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures or therapy as part of their practice. The greater the anticipated risk to a patient from the expansion of scope, the greater the expected training to safely perform additional procedures and treatments.
