BOARD CHAIR

As 2024 draws to a close, I am excited that the work to modernize our governance processes will soon bring into action a new election model for physician Board Directors. From January 6 to 24, 2025, we invite physicians across the province to apply to be candidates for five open Board seats in our spring election.

This election will differ in several important ways from our past election model. Foremost is the development of a Board Profile, which identifies the desired behavioural competencies, skills, experiences and diversity attributes for Board Directors. This month, CPSO’s Governance and Nominating Committee (GNC) will apply the Board Profile against the current Board composition to identify where gaps currently exist. This analysis will help select candidates and the desired attributes will be posted on CPSO’s election website. Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria may then be interviewed by the GNC and then notified in March about whether they will be on the 2025 election slate of nominees.

Voting will begin April 4 and close April 25, 2025. Unlike previous elections which were based on district, the new province-wide model is not restricted by geography and will allow physicians to vote for any candidate on the slate.

I encourage all physicians to participate in the new election process and contribute to a new model of regulation that serves the interests of all Ontarians.

As is my custom in these messages, I am pleased to present the highlights from the recent Board Meeting (see below). On a personal note, this particular meeting was bittersweet; it marked the conclusion of my term but presented me with the opportunity to hand over the Chair to Dr. Sarah Reid.

Sarah is a respected pediatric emergency physician at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). I urge you to read more about Sarah in a profile in this issue. She will be ably assisted by her Vice-Chair, Dr. Patrick Safieh, a Family and Emergency Physician at Humber River Hospital in Toronto.

Chairing the CPSO Board has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, and I am so proud of all that we have accomplished together. I am grateful to my fellow Board Directors, CPSO staff, and the Registrar/CEO, Dr. Nancy Whitmore, for their deep commitment to our shared vision of Trusted Doctors Providing Great Care. Finally, I would like to thank my partner, Dr. Catherine Grenier, for her inspiration, wise counsel, and support.
