CPSO is consulting on a draft policy that supports fair and transparent decision-making for physicians considering ending a physician-patient relationship.

The changes proposed in the Ending the Physician-Patient Relationship policy draft include:

  • Making the draft more high-level and principle-based;
  • Specifying that physicians are expected to provide necessary medical services to patients for a period of at least three months once the physician-patient relationship has ended; and
  • Clarifying that notwithstanding the policy’s general expectations, physicians are not required to take certain specified steps or actions if they do not feel safe doing so.

The draft Advice document includes further detail for physicians on specific reasons for ending the physician-patient relationship. That document has also been updated to include guidance on instances where the patient seeks care outside a rostered practice and managing difficult patient encounters.

Your input is important to the development of our policies. Please provide your feedback through our consultation page.
