Public Health Ontario has released a new document setting out the most current best practice infection prevention and control guidance for preventing and managing acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in all health-care settings across the continuum of care.

Best Practices for the Prevention of Acute Respiratory Infection Transmission in All Health Care Settings was created as an extension to the Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee’s Routine Practices and Additional Precautions in All Health Care Settings. The document specifically addresses prevention strategies including immunization, masking, early recognition and improved ventilation.

It also provides guidance on when health-care professionals can return to work when affected by an ARI and indicates that testing for etiology or clearance is generally unnecessary. The recognition and management of ARIs and ARI outbreaks in health-care facilities, including high-risk outpatient areas in these facilities [e.g., hemodialysis units, infusion clinics, emergency departments] is also discussed.
