CPSO’s Board of Directors has approved targeted amendments to its Prescribing Drugs policy in response to feedback from system partners regarding safer supply prescribing.

The amended policy requires that, prior to prescribing safer supply, physicians must assess patients in-person and offer patients opioid agonist therapy. For ongoing prescribing of safer supply medications, physicians must perform an in-person patient assessment at least every three months.

While this remains a complex space, these targeted amendments reflect a balanced, risk‑informed approach to help decrease unintended consequences in safer supply prescribing practices.
