CPSO is adopting a new election model for the spring 2025 election, the first of its kind for Ontario physicians seeking to become CPSO Board Directors. The election format is changing as CPSO’s governance processes are modernized to achieve a balanced Board, composed of directors who reflect the diversity of Ontario’s population and the practice of medicine.

In May 2024, the Board approved a new Board Profile that identifies the collective skills, professional backgrounds, and lived experiences desired on the Board for it to effectively oversee Ontario’s medical profession. In December, the current Board skillset will be applied against the Board Profile to identify where gaps exist.

Five seats at the Board table will be up for election and physicians will be eligible to vote for any of the candidates, regardless of where they live or practise in Ontario.

In early 2025, when the nomination period opens, applicants will be asked to demonstrate how they meet the competencies, skills, and diversity attributes needed to complement the existing Board’s skills mix, as identified through the gap analysis. Five seats at the Board table will be up for election and physicians will be eligible to vote for any of the candidates, regardless of where they live or practise in Ontario. This process underpins the new competency-based model as CPSO moves away from selection based primarily on geography.

Going forward, an election will continue to be held annually for approximately one-third of the elected Board seats, with elected Directors serving three-year terms. Please stay tuned to upcoming issues of Dialogue as we share more information about the new process and key dates.
